How does a sore throat caused by strain affect my body?

When you talk loudly for a long while, you put a lot of strain on your vocal chords. Your vocal chords have small muscles which allow you to use your voice, and when you've put a lot of strain on them they get sore, just like other muscles.

When you've spent a several hours inhaling cigarette smoke or cold air, it can start irritating your throat and lungs. As a reaction the throat and the lungs tighten up, putting strain on the muscles in the throat and around the small tubes in the lungs that distribute the air over the lungs. As a result these muscles get sore, the lungs start producing more mucus to protect them from damage.

Smokes and fumes can cause damage to your lungs and should always be avoided. Always use protection when you're working with materials that produce a lot of dust or small particles.
